Each of the practitioners at Craft Lab 23 are offering you a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of their practice. Join a workshop where you can test, trial, create and make. Tickets available now.

WORKSHOPS & EXPERIENCES

Available Monday 22nd May through to Wednesday 24th May, the workshop and events series is operated by the practitioners of Craft Lab 23. Most workshops are designed for entry level experience, allowing you a chance to explore the craft for yourself.

Tickets for the workshops are handled directly by the practitioner, and not the City of Ballarat. All proceeds from ticket sales go direct to the maker.

 

 

monday 22nd may, 2023

WOVEN TAPESTRY WITH TIM GRESHAM

In this workshop participants will explore colour and techniques of woven tapestry with tapestry weaver Tim Gresham. During the workshop we’ll produce a small tapestry to take home along with the loom it’s woven on. Learn how colour can be blended with mixed threads and by using woven techniques on the loom.

All materials will be provided including wooden loom and ready mixed yarns - post production bobbin ends from the Australian Tapestry Workshop.

Tutor: Tim Gresham. Apart from his own practice Tim is a senior weaver at the Australian Tapestry Workshop.

OVER AND UNDER WITH ANA PETIDIS

Workshop participants are invited to simulate recognisable weave structures traditionally woven on multishift looms. Expect to create a set of colourful samples of well-known structures such as plain, basket, twill, herringbone, houndstooth and rose-path. Participants will be introduced to the ‘grid’ or weaver’s draft, a binary code to create patterns (and the pre-curser to computer code technology). This is for weavers with some experience who wish to extend their skills.

Tutor: Ana Petidis. Ana has worked as a commercial textile designer and regularly teaches multi-shaft weaving.

lAMPSHADE MAKING WITH MAVERICK

Make your own custom lampshade with the team at Maverick Workshop. A selection of beautiful fabrics will be available featurinOUtg Nicola Cerini. Nicola is a local fabric designer with her designs influenced by nature.

All materials will be included and additional kits to take home available for purchase on the day. You will make and take home a 40cm diameter x 30cm high drum lampshade

SPINDLE SPINNING WITH BALLARAT SPINNERS & WEAVERS

A workshop for new spinners who will learn to spin a single on a drop spindle and ply singles into a stable balanced yarn. Other essential spinning skills, like drafting, will be covered in detail. You will be provided with a spindle kit (valued at $30) which will include the necessary fibres and an Ashford top whorl spindle. A drop spindle is an excellent way to begin your spinning journey.

Spindle kit  includes Ashford top whorl Spindle, 100gm wool roving fibre  to learn and practice with , 20 gm mixed colour fibre in a mix of bright and deep colours, 20 gm scoured natural fleece and 'dog brush' carder/comb. Included in ticket price

CARVE AND STAMP WITH KOSSALII

Join Camille and Jaewoo as they guide you through a pattern making technique that anybody can reproduce at home with paper. In this workshop you will be supplied with a small block of lino to carve. You will also be provided with some ideas to draw inspiration from as you take the time to form your own repeat pattern.

There will be an opportunity to use your stamp during the workshop and see your repetitive pattern come to life on paper. Once you learn this technique you can continue at home, using your stamp on fabrics, cards, wrapping paper - the options are boundless.

STICK LOOM WEAVING WITH BIANCA FLOWERS

Learn the ancient art of weaving in one of its most primitive forms. Artist and weaver Bianca Patetl-Flowers will guide you in this meditative process that requires no previous experience. Using a stick loom, or peg loom as they are sometimes called, you will create a small rug from raw fleece, perfect to keep your toes cosy under your desk all winter. All materials provided. This workshop uses raw unprocessed sheep wool. If you are allergic to lanolin please let the organiser know in advance.

ENAMELLING WITH THERESE MOLONEY

Learn one of the techniques of traditional enamelling to create a treasured pair of earrings.

Following Therese Moloney’s expert guidance, you will use blank copper circle shapes as the base of your creation and build your design using enamel powders. Your earrings will be fired several times and finished with sterling silver ear-hooks on the day for you to take home.

BASKETRY WITH JODIE GOLDRING

In this workshop you are invited to use recycled patterned fabrics and raffia to begin a small decorative coiled basket. We will start by making string with fabric lengths, that will be coiled using buttonhole stitch. The tutor will demonstrate how to finish the basket and provide a handout so that participants are confident to complete their basket in their own time.

String making and coiling are both techniques that can be continued at home once you learn the basics. All materials are included, but if you have some special patterned fabric you want to use bring it along.

CLAY PLANTER WITH STEPH WALLACE

Join ceramic artist Steph Wallace as she guides you through making your own pottery planter. Held in the artists own studio this fun and informative session is designed to give you basic skills in hand building and share the artists passion of sustainable and local materials.

You will learn a variety of hand-building techniques for making pottery pieces, how to decorate your work using colored clay 'slips' and underglazes and how to unlock your creativity in a fun, no pressure environment. Your plant pot will be picked up from the artists studio at a later date once fired in the kiln.

DANISH CORD WEAVING WITH PATRICK ADENEY

Participants of this workshop will be taught how to weave the seat of their very own stool using traditional Danish cord weaving techniques. Each participant will be able to take their completed piece home with them.

Each stool provided for the course will be made from Tasmanian Oak, and woven using traditional Danish paper cord. The price of all materials are included in the workshop fee. The cost of this workshop is less than the market value of each stool. This is a 6-hour course, please wear comfortable clothing and footwear.

SCULPT a tEXTURED SILVER BAND WITH ALANA SMITH

Alana Smith of Cut Off Your Hands Jewellery will take you through the steps of ring-making using the lost wax method. Over this 3-hour course you will learn about the lost wax method and use the tools provided to sculpt a ring out of wax. Alana will show you different types of wax you can work with and how to create unique textures by either removing or adding wax to your design. At the end of the night you will have a ring ready to cast in sterling silver. You will be able to create a piece that weighs up to 1.5g in wax which will result in approx 17 grams of sterling silver.

Tutor: Alana Smith. Alana is the designer behind Cut Off Your Hands and she makes handmade and handcrafted sterling silver and gold jewellery that embraces the unconventional.

SLOW STITCHING WITH ALEX BAYLEY

Slow down and experience the pleasure of mindful stitching.

Slow stitching uses simple hand-sewing techniques to add decorative or practical accents to cloth. It can be used for relaxation, to create memories in cloth, or to upcycle and extend the life of garments and household items. 

Drawing on needlework traditions from around the world, we’ll explore slow stitching techniques using natural and recycled materials, including locally plant-dyed fabrics and threads from Alex Bayley’s studio. 

A materials kit valued at $40 including fabric, thread, and basic sewing tools will be provided. Please feel free to BYO sewing kit if you wish. You may also bring an item you’d like to mend or decorate, or scraps of material you’d like to incorporate in your work. Additional materials will also be available for purchase on the day.

STUMPWORK EMBROIDERY WITH ALISON COLE

This is a three-hour workshop to create a stumpwork embroidered flower that is mounted on a size-adjustable ring. The rings are embroidered in silk on a cotton base. You will be working from a kit that will contain all fabrics, threads, wires, needles, ring, instructions, photo, and a hoop to work on. Participants are not expected to complete the project in class, but will learn all techniques to complete the project at home. You are asked to bring scissors and a magnifier if you usually use one.

pICK AND PAINT A MYSTERY MOULD WITH SHELBY SHERRITT

Participants will be able to pick their very own mystery mould off the shelves and pour it up to discover what is inside. They will learn the basics of slip casting and get to give them a go in this mysterious activity. After the moulds have been poured, the participants will get to paint their mystery item and take it home with them. Included in this workshop is the chance to pick and pour your own mould, one cast of pottery to take home as well as paints, sealant and brushes to keep after the workshop.
