Free Event. Amanda Western will open her Central Ballarat studio as a drop-in experience combining live demonstration, hands-on making and direct access to finished works.
Visitors can move through the space at their own pace, encountering the process of large-scale linocut printmaking from drawing through to carving and printing. Demonstrations will focus on the physical language of the medium — how lino is cut, how pressure is applied, and how image and surface are built through removal rather than addition. Western will work continuously throughout the day, allowing visitors to observe different stages of the process and gain insight into the decisions that shape each work.
Alongside the demonstrations, drop-in lantern-making sessions will run throughout the day, connected to the upcoming Lantern Vaults installation. Visitors can create a simple paper lantern to take home, drawing on historical forms of light and storytelling. These sessions are designed to be accessible to a broad audience, including families and first-time makers, and provide a tactile entry point into themes of light, place and memory.
The studio will be presented as both a working space and a viewing environment. Original linocuts and selected works on paper will be displayed alongside tools, blocks and materials, allowing a clear connection between process and outcome.
Visitors are encouraged to ask questions, handle materials and engage directly with the work. A selection of original prints will be available for purchase.
